Have you watched the latest episode of Only Murders in the Building yet? I just finished it and it exceeded my expectations! There’s so much to unpack in this episode, and next week’s episode looks just as good!
*this post will contain spoilers for season 2, episode 7, “Flipping the Pieces”
Episode Thoughts & Reactions
When Theo first came onto the screen in this episode, my initial reaction was ‘ugh, him?’ However, I’m happy to say that the actor and the overall episode made me rethink that. I love the character arc he’s been given, and I really hope that it’s not some sort of act. But, some of the situations dealing with his character really bugged me.
We know Theo is deaf. We know he can read lips (at least to some extent). However, that would require him to be looking at the speaker. So how the hell did he hear Mabel say ‘nice anklet’ to him? Sure, she nodded, so maybe he could assume from context, but he wouldn’t have gotten every word from that interaction like it seems he did.

But, the more aggravating thing in this episode is the lack of attempts Mabel made to effectively communicate with Theo. Sure, it’s a show, so it’s not real. But it does represent very real situations that happen every day. It does seem like she picks up a little ASL over the course of the episode (which would be maybe 12 hours), but come on. The fact that only he wrote down what he was trying to say, is infuriating. Or hell, they could have just texted each other, because let’s face it, that’d be quicker than writing everything out. Since phones and messaging is such a huge part in the show it’s honestly astounding that they didn’t do this at all.
I can’t stand it in movies or shows when the fact that they’re driving is ignored. Theo and Mabel should have been sitting on a random bench somewhere because he looked at the road only a handful of times. And especially since he’s driving in NYC, you’d think random pedestrians and who knows what else would require the ability to make sudden stops. I know this is a completely nit-picky thing, but it also doesn’t have to be – they could have just not been driving. Even sitting in a parked car would have been better.
Either the killer is in these files, or I’m some unhinged psychopath who goes into fugue states and stabs people. Either way, a girl likes to know these things about herself.
Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez)
Despite those things with Theo, I did still really like the episode. Baby Keith is just too damn cute! The moment with Oliver helping Detective Williams relieve the baby’s gas left me with the biggest grin on my face (And I’d like to add that while I new that trick already, I will only be using Oliver’s method from now on).
There’s something oddly comforting about seeing her presence on screen again. And her interactions with Charles and Oliver really showed how the 3 characters have evolved from the pilot episode.
I’m so glad Detective Williams was back in this episode. While her explanation of coming back to the city was a little odd, it was a much overdue visit. Between her rocking the tie-dye, to her breaking into song, she stood out more so in this episode than any other.

Did anyone else spit out their ice tea when Charles said he needed to help Oliver in the bathroom because it’s a “two-man job?” Just me? Cool.
The ending of the episode was so sweet – that hug between Mabel, Charles, and Oliver was so cute. And then all hell broke loose. I’m super excited for next week’s episode, because I have a feeling Only Murders in the Building will do an amazing blackout episode, and it seems like Lucy could definitely identify the killer at this point.
My Theories
At this point, the theories that I’d felt so confident in a few weeks ago are barely hanging on in my mind. I would possibly consider Teddy as the killer but I think he’s too short. Theo would be the right height and build, but wouldn’t he have still been in jail when Bunny was killed (just like Teddy)?
Who do you think murdered Bunny? I do think it’s someone that lives in the building, but I have no clue who it could possibly be at this point. The therapist? The woman who lived next to Tim Kono and wanted his place? I’m out of ideas at this point!
