Summer 2022 is fast approaching, and that means longer days, heat waves, and lots of shows to watch. Last year, I talked about 10 shows that I recommend to people, and some that I rewatch every summer. This year, I’m sharing a bit of a mix. Some of these I’ve finished, some I’ve started, and some I haven’t watched at all.
What shows do you recommend for me? Leave your answers in the comments!
Only Murders in the Building (Hulu Original)
Only Murders in the Building stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. It’s an odd combination, but it works surprisingly well. The show features 3 strangers that all live in the building, and are all true crime fanatics. When a neighbor dies, they’re convinced it wasn’t a suicide like the police claim. They begin to investigate the death and begin their own true crime podcast, “Only Murders in the Building.”

Season 1 of Only Murders in the Building is available now on Hulu. Season 2 begins this summer on June 28th.
Bridgerton (Netflix Original)
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard of Bridgerton. Based on the novels by Julia Quinn, each season revolves around 1 book in the series. Season 1 focuses on the eldest daughter, Daphne, and her search for love (book 1: The Duke and I). Season two, which was recently released, follows Anthony, the eldest son (book 2: The Viscount Who Loved Me). Just a suggestion- don’t watch this show with your parents. Just trust me.

Seasons 1 & 2 are available to stream on Netflix.
Psych (USA Network)
Psych is a comedy show that first aired in 2006. My friend had been bugging me to watch this show for years, and I always said no. And it’s for a pretty funny reason. I have no clue how I got this idea, but I was convinced that the show was all about forensic psychology. Not quite like SVU, but something similar to it. Boy, was I wrong.
Instead of the show I created in my mind, Psych is about a novice sleuth hired by the police after he cons them into thinking he has psychic powers which help solve crimes. To convince me to watch the show, when I visited Megan in Seattle last fall, we watched a couple of episodes from season 5. After that, I was hooked.
Psych seasons 1-8 are available to watch on Prime Video, and the 3 movies are available on Peacock.
Derry Girls (Channel 4)
You may want turn on subtitles for this one if you’re not good with understanding accents and fast talking. This show follows 5 high school students at a Catholic school in Northern Ireland in the 1900s. It’s absolutely hilarious, especially if you enjoy British humor. But, that also comes with lots of swearing, so be aware of who is around when you’re watching this one!
Derry Girls seasons 1 & 2 are available to stream on Netflix. Season 3 is currently airing in the UK, and my guess is it will be on Netflix late summer or early fall.
Love Island UK (ITV2)
This is another show you may want the subtitles on for, but I love hearing all of the different accents. Love Island UK is a revival of a series from the mid-2000s. Basically, it’s a reality show/game show focused on love. But, the show is quite… saucy. The sneak peak from last year paints a picture for you. Despite that, I enjoy it because it’s just funny. And, there’s also something fun about a group of girls getting all excited and squealing over boys, and watching boys pretend to be calm, cool, and collected. It’s just… kind of pure? Just forget about details like Casa Amor and the hideaway.
Love Island 2022 was announced a few days ago, and I’m so excited for it. You can watch previous seasons of Love Island UK on Hulu. This summer’s episodes will most likely be added to Hulu a day or two after airing. (I do not know this for a fact, this is based on how it worked last year, and this is how I’ll be watching)
Controversies
But, this show is not for everyone. There’s been thousands of complaints about the show over lack of inclusivity, and the negative effect it may have on viewers and contestants body image. All of the Islanders are in amazing shape- because they work out too much leading up to the show and basically starve themselves. To the point where the show has people on the production team that are tasked with making sure the Islanders eat while in The Villa. But at the end of the day, the individual Islanders make choices about diet and exercise on their own. They’re adults.
There have also been several suicides in relation to the show, and while I do not want to address that type of conversation here, I did think it was important to mention. I initially wasn’t planning on talking about any of these issues in this post, but it feels right to me. However, I have now knowledge and have not seen the U.S. or Australian versions of the show.
Overall, your thoughts on Love Island will be largely due to how seriously you take it. Enjoy the humor, and know that it’s just not that deep. It’s completely ok to enjoy the silliness and absurdity of it. And while I’ve joked to friends that I should go on the US version of the show, I also know that there’s no way in hell I’m going to stop eating (or change my eating habits in general) or begin working out like crazy.
