Self-Care is in no way a new idea, but over the past few years there has been a huge emphasis on doing things to improve your own mental health. A quick search online brings up millions of lists filled with everything imaginable. The past year has changed all of us in so many ways, and practicing self-care is more important now than ever before.
Today, I want to share with you some of my favorite self-care ideas. And, all of them are simple enough that you can easily do them this weekend.

1. Give yourself a manicure or pedicure
I’m a nail polish addict, so this is a must for me. I find it relaxing, and it’s something nice to do while watching tv or even playing The Sims. If you are in need of nail art ideas, check out my Pinterest board for nails. I have tons of ideas and tutorials that are sure to inspire you!

2. Do a face mask or hair mask
Any sort of mask is a great way to practice self-care. Or, if you’re like me and feel the need to be constantly doing something, throw a mask on and fold laundry or clean off your dresser.
3. Stretch for 20 minutes
I really enjoy stretching while catching up on YouTube videos. To avoid watching the clock, I’ll pick a video, and just stretch until it ends.
4. Take a bubble bath
Bubble baths were fun when I was 3, and they’re still fun for me at almost 30. If you’re feeling fancy, bath bombs or essential oils are great to use, but if you’re prone to allergic reactions, there are tons of options out there (especially in the baby aisles!).

5. Write in a journal
Journaling is something that I’ve always ‘wanted’ to do, but have never had the desire to actually do it each night. There’s just always other things I’d rather do to wind down at night, like reading. But, I do know people that journal each night, and they swear by it. So, if you’re considering it, it’s worth a try.
6. Do a brain dump
I always have random thoughts running through my head. There are a lot of methods for doing a brain dump, but what I find best is to sit at my desk and mentally retrace my steps from the day. It’s odd, but I’ll then remember that when I was putting my toothpaste away, I made a ‘mental note’ to get gas for my car. I’m sure there is a scientific reason why this happens like this, but it works for me, so it may work for you, too.
7. Take a walk
This is never something I actually want to do. But, every time I get up and do it, I feel so much better. I feel more clear headed, more awake, and it’s just easier to focus. If you have a dog, grab the leash and get them outside too- they’ll love you even more for it.

8. Ignore the news and social media for 24 hours
Does this really need explaining? The past week or so I’ve been much more absent on social media than usual, mainly because I just can’t mentally handle hearing about everything going on in D.C. anymore. If you’re getting depressed from headlines or annoyed with people on social media, instead of being the person that writes nasty comments to people, just log off, and give one of the other self-care ideas in this post a try. You’ll be glad you did.
9. Pick up an old hobby
I loved to read growing up, but high school A.P. classes and being an English major in college burned me out. Now, I go through phases with reading, but I used to be the kid that stayed up late with a flashlight reading (I was a rebel, what can I say?). My last post was a book review, and staying up instead of trying to fall asleep reminded me how much I enjoyed reading, and how much I do miss it. That whole day, I was pretty happy, which considering I got about 3 hours of sleep, is a miracle.
10. Make plans to look forward to
Considering there is a pandemic going on, making future plans is more difficult. But, if you’re able to, make plans with one or two friends. But, please, please, PLEASE, follow all social distancing/quarantine guidelines. All I’m going to say about that is this- be considerate and think about other people and how your actions affect them.

If you try any of these self-care ideas this weekend, let me know what was your favorite in the comments below!
