I’ve got a constant list of essential household items I need to get running through my head. Maybe it’s because I just moved back in with my parents and then will be moving again in January. And with Black Friday and all of the holiday sales going on right now, it’s hard to stop myself from buying everything at once.
But just because I can’t buy everything right now, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. If you know someone who is at some point in the moving process, these items would make great practical gifts or stocking stuffers.

Organization Items
Have you seen any of those fridge restock videos? There’s something so satisfying about watching them. But I also can’t help but wonder how much time it takes to keep a fridge looking like that. I don’t think I’ll be going that far with my fridge organization. But, these drink holders are a great idea and keep cans organized. Which means they’ll be shaken less, and less mess to clean up.
I’ve been a huge fan of using the thin velvet hangers in my closet for years. They give you so much extra room in your closet. I slowly converted all of my hangers to these, and I’ll never go back. Even if you don’t need room for other clothing, having that space to store other things is always helpful.
How do you store your k-cups or other coffee pods? I personally like this tray that you can place your coffee maker on top of. It keeps everything away and organized and can hold up to 30 pods. I do like the carousels, but I don’t think they look as nice when they’re not completely full. So, I prefer the drawers.
Cleaning Items
Cleaning supplies are those household essentials that no one wants to spend money on. Or, at least no one I know does. If you have kids or pets, or you’re just really messy, this vacuum will make life so much easier. Especially when you only have a small mess to clean, you don’t want to have to drag a larger vacuum out for it.
If you have a new puppy who’s still learning to not go potty all over your home, this spot cleaner is a must. Our dog Charlie was a senior pup, and let’s just say he had a lot of trouble holding things until he could get outside. He would also go in the same places, so at least we knew where to look… like behind my Dad’s armchair.
And finally, especially when you first move into a place, do yourself a favor and wash your washing machine before starting a load of laundry. Use one of these tablets once a month, and you’ll be good to go.
Essential Household Items No One Thinks About
I never knew how happy a long charging cable would make me. Ok, maybe happy is a bit strong for a cable. But with my 10 ft charging cable, I can be anywhere in my room or bathroom and still have my phone or iPad plugged in. Now, I know the price is a lot of money to spend on a cable- I get it. But, I also don’t regret my purchase, especially since I can use it on all of my Apple devices. But, if you’re looking for another option, I also like my 6 ft cable. Charging cords are essential household items, so it makes sense to get one that you like.
And, make sure you have surge protectors for your electronics! I love this one because it has 4 usb plugins, 10 outlet plugs, and you get the option of a 6 foot or 10 foot cord.
Brita Pitchers are always great to have, especially if you’re living in a dorm room or apartment. But, if you have roommates, one pitcher can be emptied pretty quickly, leaving you with lukewarm water. This large dispenser keeps your water cold, and allows you to go longer between filling it up. It easily fits on most shelves in a refrigerator, and overall is a great alternative to a standard pitcher. Just remember to buy the filters!

I wouldn’t usually think of gifting practical household items, but it makes so much sense as people always need them! Thanks for sharing these great ideas.
Thanks for reading! Some of the gifts like the electric toothbrush may seem weird, but that’s an item that I knew I needed to replace but never wanted to spend the money on.
